Wooden tree slice ornament -- with screws and string

I have really loved the recent projects made with string looped around strategically-placed nails. I’ve been planning on making something for outside of our apartment door, but the idea of creating a wooden ornament seemed so much more appealing. This wooden disk could be used as an ornament, gift tag, or just some cool art for the wall.

Two wood slices for crafting

First, I started with small wooden tree segments. I don’t have any trees to cut down myself, so I just purchased a couple disks from my local craft store.

Falling Leaves Painted Mobile -- a fall-themed craft project with leaves

It seems like I’m finally ready to accept fall. And it’s a good thing because it’s officially autumn this week. I’ve been inspired by some painted leaf projects I’ve seen online and decided to put my own spin on things with this leaf mobile.

Collecting fall leaves for a craft project

First I gathered all different leaves from a local park. I looked for ones that were relatively flat, undamaged, and not too brittle. I shook off the excess dirt and brought them home to use in decorating.

I feel like I’ve missed out on the beginning part of summer. I just “woke up” and it’s mid-July! There’s so much more I want to do and celebrate while it’s still warm in New York. In the spirit of summer, I made this bright watermelon bunting.

Triangle pieces for bunting

To start, I cut triangle shapes out of thick red paper. Per usual, I designed the triangles on Photoshop and then printed cut guides to make everything easier. I try to cut off all the ink, and am mindful of which side I put on the front.

I love the ocean. Since I’m originally from Rhode Island, I’m really not surprised that I’m such a beach lover. Even though it’s a little too cold to enjoy swimming in the Northeast during the spring, I still love going to walks and picking up seashells.
