Guys– did you know how easy it is to make your own hot chocolate? I had no idea, until one day recently I was out of those pre-mixed packets. I was all about to give up and have tea or coffee instead, when I realized that I had powdered cocoa on hand. Sure enough, with cocoa and a couple other ingredients I made hot chocolate in mere minutes.
To make two servings, I used:
- 1/8 – 1/4 cup of sugar (depending on sweetness preference)
- 3 tablespoons of cocoa
- a pinch of salt
- 1/4 cup hot water
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
To make the hot chocolate, I put the sugar, cocoa, salt, and hot water into my saucepan and stirred everything together as I turned on the heat. Once that boils (which is quickly), I turned down the heat a bit and added my milk. You just want to heat it all up– you don’t need to boil the mixture. Once it’s almost at your desired temperature, add in the vanilla extract. Stir well and serve!
If you only need one serving, divide the above or visit Epicurious for a very similar recipe.
Since I don’t have a microwave, this version of hot cocoa is almost as fast as using a pre-mixed packet. I feel like it’s got to be healthier, though, since I know all of the ingredients and there is no hidden corn syrup, stabilizers, or yucky stuff.
Now that I know how to make my on hot chocolate, I’ll never go back to using the packets of mix. Hopefully you like this homemade cocoa just as much as I do!
